Message from the President

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Everardo Cobos has been appointed Interim Dean of the UTRGV School of Medicine (SOM), effective May 1st.

This transition follows the announcement of Dr. Michael Hocker’s upcoming departure this summer. Over the next two months, Drs. Hocker and Cobos will work closely to ensure a seamless handoff that maintains the strong momentum at the School of Medicine and UT Health RGV. We are deeply grateful to Dr. Hocker for his leadership and vision, which have significantly advanced the School of Medicine and UT Health RGV.

Dr. Cobos brings to this role a distinguished career spanning more than four decades in academic medicine, oncology, and institutional leadership. He currently serves as Professor of Medicine and Chair of the Department of Medicine & Oncology at the SOM, and as Director of the Cancer Service Line at UT Health RGV.

Prior to joining UTRGV, Dr. Cobos served as Health Sciences Clinical Professor of Medicine and Vice-Chair of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He also held the roles of Chair of Medicine and Director of Hematology-Oncology at Kern Medical, where he led transformative efforts in patient care and academic development.

A native of El Paso, Texas, and a graduate of the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio, Dr. Cobos has devoted his career to expanding access to quality healthcare and medical education, especially in underserved communities.

At UTRGV, Dr. Cobos will provide steady leadership and vision as we continue to build on recent successes and expand our impact in medical education, research, and regional healthcare.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Cobos on this new role. We are confident his experience and commitment will ensure continued progress for our School of Medicine and the communities we serve.

Sincerely,

Guy Bailey
President
