Message from the President
Dear UTRGV Family,
I am pleased to announce that Dr. William L. Miller has been appointed the inaugural dean of our School of Optometry and will begin his role Monday, January 13.
Dr. Miller brings with him an extensive and impressive background in optometric education, research, and leadership. He currently serves as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor with tenure at the Rosenberg School of Optometry at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio. During his tenure, he has been instrumental in developing innovative academic programs, mentoring faculty, and advancing initiatives that enhance student success.
Dr. Miller’s academic journey began with a Doctor of Optometry degree from The Ohio State University College of Optometry, where he completed a Fellowship in Cornea and Contact Lens and earned a Master of Science and Ph.D. in Physiological Optics. He has served in various leadership roles throughout his career, including Chair of the Clinical Sciences Department and Director of the Cornea and Contact Lens Service, both at the University of Houston, College of Optometry. He has also held numerous editorial roles, including Associate Editor of the Optometric Clinical Practice Journal and Editorial Board Member of the Eye and Contact Lens Journal.
At UTRGV, Dr. Miller will lead the establishment of the School of Optometry, which is scheduled to begin Fall 2027. His vision aligns with our mission to create an optometry program that emphasizes excellence in education, research, and service while addressing the critical healthcare needs of the Rio Grande Valley and beyond. Under his leadership, we are confident the School of Optometry will become a premier program in the region and nation.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Miller to the UTRGV family. We are excited about the expertise and vision he brings to this important new chapter in our university’s history.
Sincerely,
Guy Bailey
President
