Course Structure
The structure of an online course varies by class. They are typically structured by week or module. Courses organized by week will have a folder for each week that contains all of the required readings, assignments, and assessments. Unlike the weekly structure, a module can span multiple weeks and contain multiple subtopics. For example, a course could have five modules, and each module will cover three chapters.
Assignments and Due Dates
Assignments and due dates will vary per course. However, common assignment types include discussion boards, quizzes/tests, and written activities. Other types may include presentations, individual or group projects, and papers.
Synchronous vs Asynchronous
Online courses can be classified as synchronous or asynchronous. A synchronous course requires students to log in to MS Teams or Zoom at a specific time. An asynchronous course will enable students to complete activities at their own pace. An example of an asynchronous activity is a Discussion Board. Synchronous class meeting times can be found in ASSIST or your course syllabus.
In-Person Components
Some online courses may require students to visit campus to fulfill the course or program requirements. This will vary per course, but can be in the form of a proctored exam.
