UTRGV offers a variety of online courses and programs designed to provide flexibility and expanded learning opportunities. While online courses allow you to learn on your schedule, they also require strong time management, communication, and study skills.

Use the following tips to help you succeed in your online courses.

At UTRGV, online courses are delivered through our Learning Management System (LMS), which is the online platform where you:

  • Access course materials
  • Submit assignments
  • Take quizzes and exams
  • Participate in discussions
  • View grades and feedback

Think of the LMS as your virtual classroom.

Attend an "LMS Orientation" to learn the software application's essential features. Log in frequently to become comfortable navigating your course. Visit our Support site for tutorials and technical assistance if needed.

In a face-to-face class, instructors can see when students are confused or disengaged. In an online course, you must communicate your needs.

  • Ask questions when something is unclear

  • Contribute thoughtfully to discussion boards

  • Share ideas and respond to classmates

  • Reach out to your instructor before problems grow

Remember: your classmates are also valuable sources of learning.

Online courses require the same level of commitment as traditional classes.

Plan to spend 5–10 hours per week for each online course. Once you receive your syllabus:

  • Record all due dates
  • Create a weekly study schedule
  • Break large assignments into smaller tasks

Consistent planning prevents last-minute stress.

Check your course at least 3–5 times per week (or daily if possible).

Frequent logins help you:

  • Stay updated on announcements
  • Track assignment deadlines
  • Participate in discussions
  • Monitor feedback and grades

Waiting too long between logins can impact both your participation and your performance.

Before diving into assignments:

  • Review the syllabus
  • Examine the course calendar
  • Browse upcoming modules
  • Understand grading policies

Getting a big-picture view helps you prepare and manage your time effectively.

Online learning relies heavily on reading. Avoid skimming.

  • Read with the goal of understanding
  • Take notes as you go
  • Outline key ideas
  • Develop questions about the material

Active reading improves comprehension and retention.

Keep a notebook or digital document for:

  • Key concepts
  • Questions
  • Instructor feedback
  • Study reminders

Good note-taking strengthens understanding and makes exam preparation easier.

Some courses include video conferencing, recorded lectures, or interactive tools.

Before these activities:

  • Test your webcam and microphone
  • Confirm your internet connection is stable
  • Install required software
  • Conduct equipment checks if needed

Preparing in advance prevents technical disruptions.

Finish each lesson before moving forward. Review your notes regularly.

Try reviewing at least twice per week. When possible:

  • Connect course content to real-life situations

  • Apply concepts to your field of study

  • Reflect on how new knowledge builds on previous learning

Application strengthens long-term understanding.

Create a dedicated study environment.

  • Choose a quiet space
  • Silence notifications
  • Close unrelated browser tabs
  • Focus only on coursework during study time

Online success requires intentional focus.
