GEAR UP students going science experiment
UTRGV GEAR UP Objectives:
  • Increase cohort students' passing rates on STAAR-EOC state exams in Science.
  • Increase the number of cohort students who enroll and receive credit from AP or Dual Enrollment courses.
  • Increase cohort teachers receiving professional development in core content strategies.
  • Increase cohort students' rate of high school graduation and participation in postsecondary education.
  • Increase cohort graduates meeting college readiness standards.
  • Increase cohort students access to advanced academic programs, technology, and digital applications through an effective STEM initiative.

Initiatives 

UTRGV GEAR UP will provide year-round programs to monitor the academic performance of students and teachers in order to increase taking rigorous courses, increase high school graduation, and prepare for post-secondary education; and embed professional development of educators to increase these performance standards. Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) will provide initiatives that will enhance the capacity of educators through professional development/programs such as:

  • Job-embedded professional development
  • Professional Learning Communities
  • Teacher Academies provided by:  Vernier, Region One, and UTRGV STEM Center of Excellence
  • STEM-focused curriculum
  • STEM-based technology (Vernier)
  • Instructional mentoring by Science Academic Coach

UTRGV Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) will implement an array of integrated resources/activities such as:
