Tryouts FAQ

How can I tryout?

A mandatory Candidate Application must be completed before the audition.

Be prepared to upload the following:

  • UREC Facility Waiver
  • Publicity Release
  • Headshot (PNG or JPG format)
  • Letter of Recommendation from former director or coach
  • A Physical (up-to-date and completed by a physician)
  • UTRGV Acceptance Letter (new students only)
  • Academic Transcript (transfer students only)

What is the tryout process?

Round 1

After submitting an online candidate application, a link will be provided to submit a video of yourself performing the assigned ROUND 1 choreography by the given deadline.

Round 2

If selected, you will receive an invitation to audition in person by email no later than April 10. Candidates will audition using an advanced jazz routine and advanced technique in small groups in front of a panel of judges.

Workshops and Tryout Process (2 Rounds)

Workshops and Tryout Process Timeline
Month Activity Description
March Dance Team Tryout Workshop at Studio 1 in the University Recreation (UREC) building. Check-in is at 7:30 a.m. Attendance of at least 1 workshop is strongly encouraged.
March-April Round 1

Submit your Online Candidate Application. You will receive a confirmation e-mail with a link and your video submission instructions starting on April 1st. If it has been over 24 hours since you submitted your application and you have not received your video instructions, please email spirit@utrgv.edu.
April Dance Team Tryout Workshop at Studio 1 in the University Recreation (UREC) building. Check-in is at 7:30 a.m. Attendance of at least 1 workshop is strongly encouraged.
April DUE: Letter of Recommendation from former director/coach. They will receive an email with instructions after you complete the online application.

DUE: Online Candidate Application.
April DUE: Round 1 Dance Team Tryout Video Submission
April In-Person Audition Invitations Emailed
April Round 2

In-person Auditions at Studio 1 in the University Recreation (UREC) building. Check-in is at 7:30 a.m.

FINAL team results are posted on social media at the end of the day.

Are there any tryout fees or costs associated with being a member of the dance team?

Yes, there is a non-refundable $30 fee which covers tryout workshops and tryouts.

What do I wear?

This is a professional audition, and you want to look and feel your best. Think of this audition as a performance.

Females

  • Wear a sports bra top, boy shorts/bike shorts, jazz shoes, and tennis shoes.
  • Hair should be worn down and styled.
  • Performance makeup and lashes should be applied (*natural makeup is preferred with false lashes).
  • Tattoos must be covered with professional-grade makeup.
  • No jewelry or piercings of any kind. Only stud earrings are acceptable.
  • MANDATORY: All-black dancewear (shoes may be black, white, or tan).
Males
  • Wear a fitted T-shirt or tank top, shorts or jazz pants, jazz shoes, and tennis shoes.
  • Clean-cut hairstyle and no facial hair.
  • No warm-ups or baggy clothing.
  • Tattoos must be covered with professional-grade makeup.
  • No jewelry or piercings of any kind. Only stud earrings are acceptable.
  • MANDATORY: All-black dancewear (shoes may be black, white, or tan).

Are spectators allowed?

Auditions are closed to the public. Only candidates, coaches, and adjudicators are allowed in the facility.

When will I find out if I made the team?

Dance Team results will be posted on social media pages no later than the end of the audition day.
