UT System and THECB
Student Representation
Student leader positions are available in The University of Texas System (UT System) and Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB). The Student Government Association facilitates the campus-level application process for these positions. The UTRGV deadline to apply for UT System Student Advisory Council is typically in mid-May and the UT System Student Regent and THECB Student Representative deadline is typically in mid-November.
UT System Student Advisory Council
The UT System Student Advisory Council was established in 1989 as a mechanism to gather student input and feedback on a variety of student issues. The first meeting of the Student Advisory Council was in February 1990.
The Student Advisory Council consists of two student representatives from each UT System component institution enrolling students and it meets three times a year, usually in Austin. In conjunction with the UT System Administration and the Chancellor, the Council provides input to the UT System Board of Regents on a variety of issues of student concern. Administrative support and assistance are provided to the Council by the UT System along with budgetary support for student travel and meetings.
Through its standing committees, the Student Advisory Council formulates recommendations which are presented by the Council leadership to the UT System Board of Regents annually at its May meeting. In addition, the Student Advisory Council is often asked to recommend student representatives to various System-wide task forces or working groups. The Council may also be asked to provide comments on proposed System-wide rule or policy changes which impact students.

UT System Student Regent
In 2005, the 79th Texas Legislature authorized the Governor to appoint a non-voting student regent for each university or university system.
To aid the Governor in his selections, the chancellor of each university system must recommend students based on applications submitted by each president on behalf of the institution’s student government organization. The student appointments serve a one-year term, from June 1 through May 31 of the following year. The UT System Student Regent and THECB Student Representative have the same rights as regularly appointed board members, except the right to vote or be counted towards a quorum for official board business. The positions serve without compensation, but will be reimbursed for expenses incurred during official Board business.

- Have a strong drive and self-motivation to contribute to the progress of higher
education in Texas - Maintain a state-wide perspective on higher education (as opposed to representing any
single college or university).
Eligibility
- Must be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student
- Must be in good academic and disciplinary standing
- Must have and maintain a 2.5 cumulative grade point average
- Must remain enrolled at the institution for duration of the term
Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Student Representative
Section 61.0225 of the Education Code authorizes the Governor to appoint a non-voting student representative to the THECB for a term not to exceed one year beginning on June 1 and ending on May 31 the following calendar year. The student representative shall enjoy the same rights as a regularly appointed board member, except the right to vote or be counted towards a quorum for official board business. The student representative serves without compensation, however shall be reimbursed by the Coordinating Board for expenses incurred during official board business.
