Student Government Association Elections
2024-2025 SGA Elections
The Student Government Association (SGA) serves as the official representation of the entire student body at UTRGV. Learn more below about candidate applications and how to vote in the upcoming 2024-2025 SGA Elections.
The following positions are available in each branch:
- Executive Officers
- President
- Vice President External
- Vice President Internal
- Legislative
- Academic Senators
- Graduate Senators
- Senator-At Large for Brownsville
- Senator-At-Large for Edinburg
Candidate Application
The candidate application will be available on the Student Government Association Elections V Link page under Forms. The deadline for students to declare candidacy is Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at 11:59 p.m.
General Eligibility for All Positions
In accordance with the Constitution of the Student Government Association, Article 1:
- 1.01.02 All currently enrolled students at the university who are not on scholastic or disciplinary probation and meet the eligibility requirements of the elected or appointed position shall be eligible to participate in SGA. All currently enrolled students at the university shall be non-voting members.
- 1.01.03 Students must meet the following requirements in order to hold an elected or appointed position:
- Undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least six (6) credit hours at the time of application and during their term of office unless within five (5) credit hours of graduation during the last semester of their current term.
- Graduate students must be enrolled in at least three (3) credit hours at the time of application and during their term of office unless within three (3) credit hours during the last semester of their current term.
- Must meet the minimum grade point average (GPA) standards for each position as outlined in the Constitution.
- Must meet all course completion requirements for each position as outlined in the Constitution.
Executive Ticket Eligibility
The President and Vice Presidents will run for office on a single slate and be elected by a plurality of votes cast.
- Undergraduate Students
- Must have completed at least two (2) fall or spring semesters at the university and completed or transferred a total of thirty (30) or more credit hours.
- 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA at time of application and maintain it throughout their term of office.
- Graduate Students
- Must have completed at least one (1) fall or spring semester or two (2) consecutive summer sessions at the university.*
- 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA at time of application and maintain good academic standing throughout their term of office.
* Graduate students that have completed an undergraduate degree at UTRGV are eligible under the undergraduate requirements.
Senator Eligibility
- Undergraduate Students
- At the time of assuming office, students must have completed at least one (1) fall or spring semester or two (2) consecutive summer sessions at the University.
- Must maintain good academic standing as defined by the University at the time of applying and throughout their term of office.
- Graduate Students
- At the time of assuming office, students must have completed at least one (1) fall or spring semester or two (2) consecutive summer sessions at the University.
- Graduate students must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA at the time of application, and appointment, as well as maintain it during their term of office.
Mandatory Candidate Meeting
All candidates are required to attend one online candidate meeting to review the Election Guidelines.
- Monday, February 26 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Tuesday, February 27 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Election Dates
Students can vote Monday, April 1 through Wednesday, April 4 via the email, “SGA General Election: Vote Now” sent to their UTRGV email. Learn more about the candidates and their platforms here.
