Tryouts FAQ

How do I sign up to tryout?

A mandatory Candidate Application must be completed before the audition.

Be prepared to upload the following:

  • UREC Facility Waiver
  • Publicity Release
  • Headshot (PNG or JPG format)
  • Letter of Recommendation from former director or coach
  • A Physical (up-to-date and completed by a physician)
  • UTRGV Acceptance Letter (new students only)
  • Academic Transcript (transfer students only)

What is the tryout process?

After submitting an online candidate application, you are invited to attend in-person tryouts at the MAC Court at University Recreation on the Edinburg campus. Check-in is at 7:30 a.m.

Candidates will tryout using the fight song, a cheer, jumps, a brief interview, and demonstrating tumbling skills in front of a panel of judges.

Workshops and Tryout Process

Workshops and Tryout Process Timeline
Month Activity Description
March Cheer Team Tryout Workshop at the MAC Court in the University Recreation (UREC) building. Check-in is at 7:30 a.m. Attendance of at least 1 workshop is strongly encouraged.
March-April Submit your Online Candidate Application. If you have any further questions, please email spirit@utrgv.edu.
April Cheer Team Tryout Workshop at the MAC Court in the University Recreation (UREC) building. Check-in is at 7:30 a.m. Attendance of at least 1 workshop is strongly encouraged.
April DUE: Letter of Recommendation from former director/coach. They will receive an email with instructions after you complete the online application.

DUE: Online Candidate Application.
April In-person auditions will be held at the MAC Court in the University Recreation (UREC) building on the Edinburg campus.

FINAL team results are posted on social media at the end of the day.

Are there any tryout fees or costs associated with being a member of cheer team?

Yes, there is a non-refundable $30 fee which covers tryout workshops and tryouts.

What do I wear?

Females

  • Wear a sports bra top and/or fitted t-shirt, bike shorts, and cheer shoes.
  • Hair should be worn up and out of the face.
  • Natural performance makeup is preferred.
  • No jewelry.
  • Tattoos must be covered with professional-grade makeup.
  • All-black attire is preferred.
Males
  • T-shirt, shorts, and cheer shoes/tennis shoes.
  • Clean-cut hairstyle (out of face) and neatly groomed facial hair.
  • No warm-ups or joggers.
  • Tattoos must be covered with professional-grade makeup or a nude tattoo sleeve.
  • Natural performance makeup is preferred.
  • Preferred: All-black attire.

Are spectators allowed?

Tryouts are closed to the public. Only candidates, coaches, and adjudicators are allowed in the facility.

When will I find out if I made the team?

Cheer Team results will be posted on social media pages no later than the end of the audition day.
