Performance Based Supplemental Instruction
Performance Based Supplemental Instruction (PBSI) is an academic assistance program that utilizes peer collaborative learning study sessions. PBSI sessions are regularly scheduled, informal review sessions in which students compare notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools, and predict test items. Students learn how to integrate course content and study skills while working together. The sessions are facilitated by “SI leaders”, students who have previously done well in the course and who attend all class lectures, take notes, and act as model students. Traditionally, PBSI targets high failure, high enrollment rate courses. In PBSI the professors have chosen to make the PBSI study sessions a requirement in their syllabus and students are required to attend a certain number of sessions - based on the professor's discretion based on performance in exams. The SI Leader attends all lectures, then provides 3 hours of study sessions outside of the class. Research has shown that participant pass rates are typically higher than non-participant pass rates.
If you are enrolled in a class with Performance Based Supplemental Instruction, you professor has chosen to make the PBSI study sessions a requirement in their syllabus and students are required to attend a certain number of sessions - based on the professor's discretion based on performance in exams.
Times and locations are announced during class based on survey responses.
