Application & Selection

Our Internal Medicine Residency Program is dedicated to selecting highly qualified candidates who demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in patient care, scholarship, leadership, and providing care to underserved communities. Our selection process is holistic, considering various facets of each applicant's background and achievements.

  1. Application Submission: Candidates interested in our residency program must submit their applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We DO NOT accept applications outside of ERAS. This includes all required documents such as:

    • Personal statement
    • Curriculum vitae (CV)
    • Medical school transcript
    • Deans Letter (MSPE)
    • USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 scores
    • Letters of recommendation (4)
    • For IMG graduates, ECFMG certificate prior to rank list submission

  2. Evaluation of Academic Performance: Applicants must submit United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 1 exam scores at the time of application. USMLE Step 2 results should be submitted in time for ranking (late February). Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensure Examination scores are accepted.  Applicants who graduated over 5 years ago must have all USMLE steps completed to be considered.

  3. Scholarly Activity: Engagement in quality improvement projects, research, publications, or other scholarly activities is highly valued in our program. This involvement showcases a commitment to advancing medical knowledge and an understanding of evidence-based practice.

  4. Leadership Roles: We seek individuals who have taken on leadership positions in academic, professional, or community organizations. Demonstrating leadership skills — whether through student government, advocacy groups, or other initiatives — indicates a candidate's ability to work effectively in a team and their potential to influence positive change within the medical community.

  5. Community Service: We are committed to serving our diverse community in the Rio Grande Valley, and we value applicants who have a demonstrated history of community service. Evidence of volunteer work, especially in healthcare-related settings, reflects a compassionate dedication to patient care and an understanding of the social determinants of health.

  6. Interviews: Selected applicants will be invited for interviews, which will be virtual. Interviews typically include meetings with faculty members, current residents, and program leadership, allowing candidates to learn more about our program and ask questions. Interviews will take place from October-January. All communication regarding interviews will be through ERAS.

  7. NRMP match: Our program participates in the NRMP match and follows the deadlines set forth by both ERAS and NRMP. We do NOT offer positions outside of the match.
