Curriculum

Overall Structure

The residency program spans three years, with a balance between clinical rotations, didactic learning, research opportunities, and community service. The curriculum is regularly reviewed and updated to adhere to ACGME standards, ensuring that residents receive the most current and relevant training in internal medicine.

By the end of the program, residents will be well-equipped to pursue board certification in internal medicine and embark on successful careers as competent, compassionate, and knowledgeable internists.

The following table shows which rotations are built into each year of training. We build in 2-week subspecialty rotations that are mandatory, but residents can complete additional time in whichever specialties they choose during their elective time. Residents receive 3 weeks of vacation per PGY year.

Individualized-Learning Plan

Elective time allows each resident to individualize their medical training. Residents will meet with their mentor to review career goals and choose electives that align with their goals. Residents may choose to spend additional time on any of the core subspecialty rotations which are already built into their schedule. Some additional electives include:

  • Primary care, private practice, procedures, POCUS, board study, research, dermatology, away rotations

Curriculum

Residents have didactic time from 12-1pm Mon- Fri. During this time, we have the following educational sessions:

  • Case Report

    • Case report noon conference led by internal medicine residents is a structured, educational session where residents present and discuss a specific patient case to their peers and attending physicians.
    • Residents present one case per year

  • Subspecialty lectures covering ABIM topics

    • Didactic sessions led by internal medicine subspecialists where they present and discuss ABIM topics related to their specialty. These sessions aim to provide in-depth knowledge and insights on complex medical issues, enhance clinical understanding, and stay updated with the latest research and guidelines.

  • Resident Grand Rounds

    • Residents are invited to present a comprehensive talk on a specific topic within internal medicine. These lectures are designed to provide an update on recent advances, address complex clinical issues, and enhance their understanding of various aspects of internal medicine.
    • Residents will present one grand rounds during their training

  • Journal Club

    • Residents gather to critically review and discuss recent research articles. These sessions are designed to enhance understanding of current medical literature, evaluate the quality of research studies, and integrate findings into clinical practice.
    • Residents will work in groups of 2-3 to present a journal article every year

  • Morbidity & Mortality
