Program Description

Welcome to the UTRGV Internal Medicine Residency Program at HCA which is primarily based at Rio Grande Regional Hospital (RGRH) in McAllen, Texas, with a secondary location at Valley Regional Medical Center (VRMC) in Brownsville, Texas. Our program is designed to provide comprehensive training for residents in a diverse and dynamic environment, preparing them for successful careers in internal medicine.

Program Mission:

Our mission is to train physicians of diverse experiences and talents to become agents of change, enabling our graduates to transform their communities by providing compassionate, comprehensive, evidence-based care for patients of all needs and backgrounds in the Rio Grande Valley and beyond.

Program Overview:

Our multi-site residency program offers a unique opportunity to train in two key healthcare facilities within the Rio Grande Valley. At RGRH, residents will benefit from a high-volume, hands-on experience that encompasses a wide range of medical conditions. Our program emphasizes a strong foundation in clinical skills, patient-centered care, and evidence-based medicine.

At VRMC, residents will gain valuable exposure to different patient demographics and healthcare challenges, enriching their training experience. This dual-site approach allows residents to engage with a diverse patient population, enhancing their understanding of various health issues and treatment modalities.

Core Training Experience:

Throughout the residency, learners will rotate through various subspecialties, including but not limited to:

  • General Internal Medicine
  • Cardiology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Infectious Disease
  • Pulmonary Medicine & Critical Care
  • Nephrology
  • Endocrinology
  • Rheumatology
  • Palliative Care
  • Geriatrics
  • Neurology
  • Emergency Medicine

Additionally, residents will engage in outpatient continuity clinics, participate in multidisciplinary team rounds, and have opportunities for involvement in research and quality improvement projects. Our curriculum is designed to foster critical thinking, enhance clinical judgment, and promote lifelong learning.

Educational Environment:

Our faculty comprises experienced internists and subspecialists dedicated to teaching, mentorship, and the academic development of our residents. The collaborative atmosphere encourages open communication, with an emphasis on sharing knowledge and experiences. We promote a culture of safety, empathy, and respect, ensuring a supportive learning environment where residents can thrive.

Community Engagement:

Located in the vibrant Rio Grande Valley, our program is deeply committed to serving the local community. Residents will have the opportunity to work with underserved populations and engage in outreach programs, enhancing their cultural competence and understanding of healthcare disparities.
