ID Cards Are Required to Board Vaquero Express Routes

Starting in the Fall 2025 semester (September 2, 2025), ID cards are required to be scanned to board any Vaquero Express route at the bus stop locations shown below.

Customer Service Assistants (CSAs) will be stationed at all boarding locations at all departure times. CSAs will ask for University-issued ID cards (V OneCard) or government-issued ID cards (for those not affiliated with UTRGV) prior to boarding any bus on Vaquero Express. Both physical and digital cards can be scanned.

Passengers who refuse to provide their card will not be allowed to board.

Bus Stop Locations

  1. Edinburg Campus
  2. Brownsville Campus
  3. Harlingen Convention Center (Park & Ride)
  4. Weslaco City Hall/CIC (Park & Ride)
Why do I need to provide an ID card?

Starting Fall 2025, the Parking and Transportation Policy requires all UTRGV students, faculty, and staff to use their UTRGV V OneCard to access transportation services.  ID cards are required to help the department keep track of ridership and other data-collection purposes to help us improve service. Data collected includes ridership by departure location and time of day, ridership by region, miles traveled, and hours traveled.

What happens if I don’t provide an ID card?

If an ID card is not provided, the passenger will not be allowed to board the bus.

What if I don’t have an ID card?

As a member of the UTRGV community, you must have your UTRGV ID card with you at all times while on university property; reference policy ADM 10-110.

Where can I get a V OneCard?

You can access your V OneCard digitally from the GET app. When you board, you can use your phone to present the card. Scan the QR code in this flyer to get the GET app.

To get a physical ID card, visit a Campus Card Services location and be prepared to take a photo. You will be asked to present a valid photo ID such as a current Passport, state-issued ID, driver license, or military ID.

I ride a lot. Do I need to provide my ID card every single time?

Yes, the card must be presented every time you board.

I ride a lot and the transportation staff knows me already. Do I need to provide a card?

Yes. Even if the transportation staff knows you, scanning your ID is required for each ride.

Can I provide my Driver License or state ID card instead?

UTRGV students, faculty, and staff must provide their V OneCard to board.

What if I’m not associated with UTRGV?

Vaquero Express bus service is open to members of the general public, who will not have a University-issued ID. In that case, a government-issued driver license or ID card may be provided.

I only have a copy of my government-issued ID on my phone. Is that okay?

Yes, you may provide a copy as long as it is clearly legible, shows your photo, and can be scanned.

I’ve been a rider of Vaquero Express in the past and have never been refused boarding. Why the change now?

Our previous data collection practices needed improvement because we weren’t getting usable data or had issues with unreliable hardware. Data helps us improve our service.

What if my V OneCard was lost or stolen?

When an ID card has been lost or stolen, the cardholder must place the card on lost status as soon as possible. Placing a card on lost status protects the cardholder by deactivating the card privileges. Once the card is placed on lost status, it cannot be used until it is re-activated or replaced by a newly printed card.

To report your card as lost/stolen, login to the GET Portal and select "I Lost My Card" under Quick Links. You can also email cardservices@utrgv.edu or call (956) 665-7276.

Can I provide my ID number instead of the actual card?

Unfortunately, no. Since the card will be scanned by a machine, you must provide the card. The device will not allow manual entry.

What if my card is damaged and can’t be read?

If there is an issue with the card, we’ll let you know when we attempt to scan it. We will recommend that you contact one of the Campus Card Services offices to fix the issue or replace the card. In the meantime, your ID number will be recorded and you will be allowed to ride. If, after that, your card continues to have issues, we will be unable to board you.
