Respondus LockDown Browser Best Practices

  • Inform your students about test formats (online/face-to-face) and any equipment requirements such as webcams to take Respondus LockDown Browser & Monitor exams. It is recommended to include this information in your Course Syllabus.
  • Do not use “Force Completion” under Test Options when configuring your tests. There is a higher chance that any brief network interruption will cause Respondus to give a loading error and auto-submit the exam. As an alternative use the Set Timer tool.
Auto-submit:

  1. If you select the timer, turn on Auto-submit to automatically save and submit a test or survey when the time expires.
  2. Without enabling auto-submit, students have the option to continue after time expires.

Timer:

  1. During a timed test, the time elapsed is displayed to students. As students approach the time limit, a one-minute warning appears.
  2. If the student's connection breaks, the student can return to the test. The timer will continue to record the time from the initial point of entry.
  3. If a student saves and exits the test, the timer continues. For example, if he begins the test on Tuesday, saves and exits it, then completes it on Thursday, his completion time will be 48 hours.
  • Do not use the “lock students into the browser until the exam is a completed” option from the Respondus LockDown Browser Dashboard, under Advanced Settings.
  • Consider allowing multiple attempts for low stake assessments.
  • Consider displaying questions one at a time and prohibit backtracking for remote online exams.
  • Consider displaying test results such as correct and incorrect answers after the due date or after all attempts are graded when proctoring online exams.
  • Consider using a timer based on the number of questions and complexity of the exam when proctoring online exams.
  • Please remember to add extended time for students with testing accommodation if you have received a letter of accommodation from Student Accessibility Services.
  • Consider allowing students to take the exam from an iPad by selecting this option from the Respondus LockDown Browser Dashboard under Advanced Settings. Only quizzes or low stake exams are recommended to be taken from iPads.
  • Communicate detailed instructions for the exam upfront (including how many questions, types of questions, etc.) so students feel prepared for the exam.
  • Make your expectations clear to your students about allowable resources. When using Respondus Monitor, explain in detail how to perform the environment check and show permissible resources.
  • Choose to display questions randomly and from a large test bank.
  • Create a mockup test to allow your students to take a practice test and get familiar with the process, test out their equipment and troubleshoot any issues.
  • Ask your students to contact our COLTT Help Desk to report any technical issues encountered while using Respondus LockDown Browser. Our support team will assist students with the problems and get your approval if exams need to be reopened.
  • If the course is a copy, please remember to open the LockDown Browser Dashboard once before students began taking exams to resolve any errors.
  • Direct students to use the Help Center before each exam. With LockDown Browser open, log into the course, and select the Help Center button from the toolbar. From there, run the Webcam Check and the System Check to make sure everything is working correctly.
  • Don’t alter any settings in a Respondus LDB after you deploy a test. If altered a “Fix it Error” will appear in the Respondus LockDown Browser Dashboard.
  • If Lockdown Browser is enabled for the test, DO NOT change the password that appears on the Test Options page. This password is randomly generated when Lockdown Browser is enabled, and removing or modifying the password on the Test Options page will break the Lockdown Browser integration. This password is NOT to be provided to students. If the student is requesting a password, advise them they must access Lockdown Browser to take the exam and a password will not be required.
  • If you wish to set a password for a test that requires the Lockdown Browser, enter a password under the LockDown Browser Dashboard under Password Settings.
  • Inform students when trying to view the test results they must access them using Respondus LockDown Browser.
