Why Live On Campus
The benefits of living on campus have been documented for decades, not the least of which are belonging to a community of learners, participating in a support program designed for persistence and success, and benefiting from convenient access to academic buildings and learning resources. Campus residents have the opportunity to interact and learn alongside a diverse group of peers.
Academic Performance
Living on campus gives students an academic edge. According to the American Council on Education, studies show that students who reside on campus achieve higher grade point averages than their off-campus peers. Students in the Biomedical field will be able to join a Living Learning Community for Biomed majors for a residential experience that integrates academic and social learning. We will be adding other Living Learning Communities on the Fall 2019.
Personal Development and Leadership Opportunities
Living on campus and being involved in your residence hall is one of the best ways to get the most out of your college experience. Previous research has demonstrated that students’ ability to find a sense of belonging in college is positively associated with their intent to persist to degree completion. What better way to feel that you belong than by living on campus with other students who are learning and growing together? Campus housing creates a supervised environment conducive to healthy personal and social development by providing residents the opportunity to form an identity, or sense of community, with the institution. It also eases the transition to UTRGV, as everyone is going through many of the same experiences together. Gain leadership opportunities by participating in the Residence Hall Association (RHA). Many RHA members become leaders within the university, and many apply to become Resident Advisors after their first year of living on campus. This means your housing costs could be covered by the university in exchange for your work.
