Graduate Assistantships Job Titles and Eligibility

Assistantships give students the opportunity to work on campus (up to 20-hour work weeks) and are based on college/institutional demands and funds. Three types of assistantships offered are:

• Teaching
• Research
• Graduate

10096 - Graduate Assistant

Duties must be related to the student’s field of study or provide professional development and will vary depending on the project and/or assigned responsibilities. Graduate Assistants may be assigned to professional staff in any department of the University. Additional details will be provided by the hiring department.

FLSA: Exempt                                FTE: 0.5 (Max)                      Eligible for Non-Resident Tuition Waiver: No

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be admitted to a graduate degree program.
  • Must be in good academic standing.
  • Be registered full-time for the respective semester—nine (9) semester credit hours during the fall semester, nine (9) semester credit hours during the spring semester, three (3) semester credit hours during the summer session—or be registered in the required number of semester credit hours to fulfill the only remaining requirements of the degree plan.

 

10082 - Graduate Assistant WS

Duties must be related to the student’s field of study or provide professional development and will vary depending on the project and/or assigned responsibilities. 10095 - Graduate Research Assistant

Duties will vary depending on the project and/or assigned research scholarly functions or other creative aspects. Additional details will be provided by the hiring department.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be admitted to a graduate degree program

10081 - Graduate Research Assistant WS

10047 - Graduate Teaching Assistant

Graduate Teaching Assistant responsibilities will be determined by colleges, departments, and/or programs. Such duties include, but are not limited to, providing feedback and/or grading student work; monitoring/proctoring course activities; leading and/or supervising laboratory sessions, discussion sessions, or recitation labs; providing assistance to students during scheduled office hours; and performing clerical tasks associated with course instruction.

FLSA:  Exempt                    FTE:  0.5 (Max)                              Eligible for Non-Resident Tuition Waiver: Yes

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be admitted to a graduate degree program
  • Must be in good academic standing
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher appropriate to the area of service
  • Be registered full-time for the respective semester—nine (9) semester credit hours during the fall semester, nine (9) semester credit hours during the spring semester, three (3) semester credit hours during the summer session, or be registered in the required number of semester credit hours to fulfill the only remaining requirements of the degree plan.

 

10080 - Graduate Teaching Assistant WS

Graduate Teaching Assistant responsibilities will be determined by colleges, departments, and/or programs. 10066 - Graduate Assistant Instructor

As Instructors of Record, Graduate Assistant Instructors will function as auxiliary teaching staff and are employed to teach courses scheduled at the undergraduate level. (For additional requirements associated with teaching assignments see the UTRGV Faculty Teaching Qualifications Policy.) The maximum number of teaching hours for a semester is six (6) and the maximum amount of time allowed for assigned duties is twenty (20) hours per week. Discipline-specific required and preferred qualifications are determined by the hiring department.

FLSA:  Exempt                    FTE:  0.5 (Max)                              Eligible for Non-Resident Tuition Waiver: Yes

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Be unconditionally enrolled as a master’s student
  • Be in good academic standing
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher appropriate to the area of service
  • Have successfully completed eighteen (18) hours of graduate coursework in the assigned teaching discipline
  • Be registered full-time for the respective semester—nine (9) semester credit hours during the fall semester, nine (9) semester credit hours during the spring semester, three (3) semester credit hours during the summer session, or be registered in the required number of semester credit hours to fulfill the only remaining requirements of the degree plan.

 

10064 - Graduate Associate Instructor (PhD Students)

As Instructors of Record, Graduate Associate Instructors will function as auxiliary teaching staff and are employed to teach courses scheduled at the undergraduate level.   • Be unconditionally enrolled as a doctoral student, having completed a majority of the requirements for the doctoral degree.
  • Be in good academic
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher appropriate to the area of
  • Have successfully completed eighteen (18) hours of graduate coursework in the assigned teaching
  • Be registered full-time for the respective semester—nine (9) semester credit hours during the fall semester, nine (9) semester credit hours during the spring semester, three (3) semester credit hours during the summer session, or be registered in the required number of semester credit hours to fulfill the only remaining requirements of the degree plan.
