Graduation Information

Applying for graduation—A MUST DO!

If you are close to completing your degree requirements, there are some things you need to know to ensure your graduation experience is a pleasant one:

  • Graduation is the process where we verify that you have met all conditions to receive a degree. You must tell us you are completing your requirements by applying for graduation through ASSIST. This application is mandatory whether you are planning on attending the commencement ceremony or not.
  • Commencement is the ceremony held only during the Fall and Spring semesters. It is symbolical in nature since degrees have not been awarded at that point. Students often confuse “Graduation” with the “Commencement Ceremony”. The students finishing their degree requirements in the summer will be invited to either the Spring or the Fall commencement ceremonies as UTRGV does not offer a ceremony in the Summer.
  • The application for graduation is mandatory and usually opens a semester before your intended graduation date. It is extremely important that you apply with enough time for us to review your record. Applying late could result in delay of your graduation date if you are found to be missing requirements or your name not printed in the commencement brochure.

Now that we have covered the basics, let’s take a look at all the different steps you need to take.

For updates on graduation application deadlines or Commencement Participation, please visit the Guide to Graduation webpage.

MAKE A PAYMENT

After you submit your Graduation Application, a $50 fee will be posted to your my.utrgv.edu account.  Application for graduation of a graduate certificate is free of charge.

KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR UTRGV EMAIL FOR UPDATES

Correspondence regarding graduation requirements, deficiencies and commencement ceremonies will be disseminated in a timely manner throughout the final semester of a student’s enrollment, via UTRGV student e-mail account. The Degree Audit Systems and Support Office (Degree Audit Team) will communicate information regarding graduation requirements, deficiencies, clearance for graduation, and all respective deadlines. The Office of the University Registrar will communicate information regarding graduation and commencement ceremonies. UTRGV email must be monitored regularly for related degree audit, graduation, and commencement ceremony correspondence.

MEET ALL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE YOU ARE SEEKING

Be sure that you have fulfilled all requirements specified on your official degree plan.  If you chose to purse the Thesis or Dissertation option, you should consult with the Graduate Program Coordinator for specific procedures that must be followed.  In order to have the title of your thesis printed in the Commencement program, it must be approved prior to printing deadlines, which are approximately eight weeks before graduation.

ENJOY YOUR GRADUATION! YOU EARNED IT

For information on the date of the commencement ceremony visit the Guide to Graduation webpage or contact the Office of the University Registrar at 956-665-2201 or commencement@utrgv.edu. If you are interested in purchasing academic regalia and invitations, visit the university bookstore or call them at 956-665-2252.

Note: If you have already applied for graduation but need to change your graduation date, please use the "Transfer Graduation Form"
