Congratulations to CSRPA Staffer Alvaro Marquez who was awarded an Engaged Scholar Award for Spring 2018. Mr. Marquez' project will examine first-generation Latino students’ perceptions of the barriers they face in post-secondary education and their subjective understandings of available supports in order to inform practices and policies that lead to student success. His mixed-methods study will combine a web-based Qualtrics survey and in-depth interviews with undergraduate students enrolled and formerly enrolled at UTPA/UTRGV.

As a dual Sociology and Spanish major, and an aspiring educator, Mr. Marquez' project is motivated by his desire to understand the barriers faced by first generation students in order to engage his future students, and prepare them for success in postsecondary education.

In February 2018, CSRPA welcomed 5 students from the University of Michigan School of Public Health Action Support Team (PHAST) program to assist with the LRGV Population Health Survey. Students helped with translation, tested and piloted the survey. Their insightful suggestions and feedback was vital in helping us fine-tune the survey instrument. Thank you Brittany, Jennifer, Audrey, Ariana, Elizabeth, and Jack. We look forward to future collaborations through this program.
