Understand Your Core Curriculum

During your time at UTRGV, you will be engaged in a Core educational experience that focuses on your holistic development as a person. From cultivating your communication skills to applying your knowledge in a real world setting, the Core is an educational milestone (generally takes about 3 terms to complete) required of all students as a means to foster your critical thinking, expand your worldly horizons and establish the foundational soft-skills for your transition into the real world.

In connection with your Road Map, take a few moments to review your Core requirements and observe how your major intersects with the Categories listed in the Core. Also, as you review the Core, think and reflect about the following:

  • Of the 9 Core Categories, which core categories most interest me?
  • Within that category, what courses do I find most appealing?
  • After reviewing the list of courses within each Core Category, what new skill or knowledge do I hope to gain in those courses that most interest me? How does that skill or knowledge connect to my academic and career goals?
  • Of the courses that are of most interest, do these core courses align with my Road Map? If not, how can I enroll in these courses while still making progress towards my degree requirements?

If you have questions about the Core courses and their connection to your undergraduate graduation requirements, reach out to the Academic Advising Center. We’re here to answer your questions and provide guidance as you work towards fulfilling your academic milestones!
