Spanish Translation and Interpreting (BA)

We offer the first and most complete BA program in Spanish Translation and Interpreting in the State of Texas. The program's scope is to help future practitioners of the art and science of Translation and Interpreting to play a vital role in shaping the global society of the 21st century. The program will contribute to the development of analytical skills, cultural literacy, linguistic competence, and professionalism. In addition to course offerings in writing and language, the program requires students to complete a thorough translation and interpreting curriculum that is among the most comprehensive in the United States.

All the courses in the Spanish Translation and Interpreting BA have been designated as Spanish or Bilingual courses, which means they can be used to fulfill the requirements for obtaining the B3 Scholar Seal. Such courses help fulfill the vision of UTRGV as a bilingual, bicultural, and biliterate (B3) university.

Minor in Spanish Translation

We offer a 6-course (18 credit) Minor in Spanish Translation that provides a general introduction to the discipline and requires 6 credits of electives to be chosen among the specialization courses available. This allows for students to concentrate in areas such as Medical Interpreting or Translation Technologies.

Certificate in Healthcare Interpreting

We offer a 5-course (15 credit) undergraduate Certificate in Healthcare Interpreting that covers the fundamentals of translation and interpreting as applicable to healthcare settings. The certificate program provides students with essential training to develop their medical Spanish and the transfer skills necessary for translating and interpreting.
