Honors-by-Contract Process
At the UTRGV Honors College, Honors By Contract (HBC) gives you the opportunity to transform a regular course into an honors-level experience. In partnership with your instructor, you design a project that deepens your learning and challenges you to go further.
An HBC is not about adding more work. It’s about creating purposeful, high-impact learning through inquiry, creativity, leadership, or community engagement.
Interested in B3 Scholar Recognition?
You can align your HBC by incorporating bilingual (written and spoken) components or focusing on bilingual and multilingual communities. Be sure to discuss this with your instructor early.
How It Works
The Honors By Contract process includes two key stages:
Proposal (Beginning of Semester)
A collaborative agreement is developed within the first 3 weeks of the semester.
Documents:
- Proposal Checklist
Ensure your proposal is complete by using this checklist. - Sample Email to Contact a Professor
Use this template to request a HBC opportunity from faculty. - Honors-by-Contract Proposal Form
Download and complete this form. Use the proposal checklist for guidance. - Submission Form
Upload the completed HBC Proposal Form using this submission form.
Deadlines:
- Fall/Spring: Within three weeks of the Fall or Spring semester start date
- Summer: Within two weeks of the Summer I or Summer II start date
Evaluation
The supervising faculty member evaluates the student's performance at the end of the term. Credit is only awarded if the evaluation form is completed and submitted. The supervising faculty member will submit the evaluation form directly to the Honors College.
Documents:
- Standard Evaluation Form
- Designated Honors Sections Evaluation Form
- Capstone Alternative Evaluation Form
Deadline:
- Day that grades are due for the current semester.
Your HBC Project
Your project should enhance, not duplicate, the course by adding depth and complexity. You may choose to focus on:
- Research or scholarly work
- Creative or applied projects
- Community-engaged or global experiences
- Leadership or applied practice
Important Guidelines
- Up to 2 HBCs per semester
- Must be completed alongside regular coursework
- Incomplete HBC = course credit only (no honors credit)
Take Your Learning Further
Design an academic experience that reflects your goals and pushes you beyond them.
