Your Honors Journey Starts Here
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Honors College welcomes students from all majors who are ready to challenge themselves academically, grow as leaders, and make an impact.
Students may apply to the Honors College by December 31 for Spring entry, April 30 for Summer I or II, and June 30 for the Fall semester. Most applicants hear back within two weeks.
High School Seniors
You are eligible to apply if you meet at least one of the following:
- Minimum GPA: 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) or
- Top 10% of your graduating class
Transfer Students (from STC Honors Program)
If you are transferring from the South Texas College Honors Program:
- Minimum GPA: 3.5
- You may transfer up to 9 honors credit hours into the UTRGV Honors College.
Current UTRGV Students
If you are already a UTRGV student:
- Minimum GPA: 3.5 and
- 12+ completed college credit hours (not including dual or concurrent enrollment)
Automatic Admission Categories
The following students receive automatic admission to the Honors College:
- UTRGV Math & Science Academy graduates, who also receive 9 credit hours of honors coursework upon entry.
- Recipients of UTRGV Presidential, Distinguished, Meritorious, or Luminary Scholarships.
Application Requirements
- Two letters of recommendation
- At least one from a high school teacher or college faculty
- At most one from a workplace, internship, or volunteer supervisor
- Written OR video essay
- List of extracurricular activities with brief descriptions
- Transcript from current institution
Deadlines
Apply by the following dates based on your intended start term:
- Summer Sessions I or II: April 30
- Fall Semester: June 30
- Spring Semester: December 31
Most applicants receive a decision within two weeks of submitting a complete application.
