Graduate Assistantships Job Titles and Eligibility

Assistantships give students the opportunity to work on campus (up to 20-hour work weeks) and are based on college/institutional demands and funds. Three types of assistantships offered are:

• Teaching
• Research
• Graduate

10096 Graduate Assistant

Duties must be related to the student’s field of study or provide professional development and will vary depending upon the project and assigned responsibilities.  Graduate assistants may be assigned to professional staff in any department of the University. Additional details provided by Department.

FLSA:  Exempt                    FTE:  0.5                               Eligible for In-State Tuition Waiver:  No

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be admitted to a graduate degree program.
  • Must be in good academic standing.
  • Be registered full-time for the respective semester (nine semester credit hours during the fall semester, nine semester credit hours during the spring semester, six semester credit hours during the summer session or be performing supervised research with a UTRGV faculty member) or be registered in the required number of semester credit hours to fulfill the only remaining requirements on the degree plan.

 

10082 Graduate Assistant WS

Duties must be related to the student’s field of study or provide professional development and will vary depending upon the project and assigned responsibilities.  Graduate assistants may be assigned to professional staff in any department of the University. Additional details provided by Department.

FLSA:  Exempt                    FTE:  0.5                               Eligible for In-State Tuition Waiver:  No

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be admitted to a graduate degree program.
  • Must be in good academic standing
  • Be registered full-time for the respective semester (nine semester credit hours during the fall semester, nine semester credit hours during the spring semester, six semester credit hours during the summer session or be performing supervised research with a UTRGV faculty member) or be registered in the required number of semester credit hours to fulfill the only remaining requirements on the degree plan.
  • Work study eligible.

 

10095 Graduate Research Assistant

Duties will vary depending on the project and assigned research/scholarly functions, or other creative aspects. Additional details provided by Department.

FLSA:  Exempt                    FTE:  0.5                               Eligible for In-State Tuition Waiver:  Yes

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be admitted to a graduate degree program.
  • Must be in good academic standing
  • Be registered full-time for the respective semester (nine semester credit hours during the fall semester, nine semester credit hours during the spring semester, six semester credit hours during the summer session or be performing supervised research with a UTRGV faculty member) or be registered in the required number of semester credit hours to fulfill the only remaining requirements on the degree plan.

 

10081 Graduate Research Assistant WS

10047 Graduate Teaching Assistant

Duties include, but are not limited to, providing feedback and/or grading student work; monitoring/proctoring course activities; leading laboratory sessions, discussion sessions, or recitation labs; providing office hour assistance to students; and performing clerical tasks associated with course instruction.  Additional details provided by Department.

FLSA:  Exempt                    FTE:  0.5                               Eligible for In-State Tuition Waiver:  Yes

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be admitted to a graduate degree program.
  • Must be in good academic standing.
  • Be registered full-time for the respective semester (nine semester credit hours during the fall semester, nine semester credit hours during the spring semester, six semester credit hours during the summer session or be performing supervised research with a UTRGV faculty member) or be registered in the required number of semester credit hours to fulfill the only remaining requirements on the degree plan.

10064 Graduate Associate Instructor

Serves as instructor of record. Additional details provided by Department.

FLSA:  Exempt                    FTE:  0.5                               Eligible for In-State Tuition Waiver:  Yes

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be in good academic standing.
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher appropriate to the area of service.
  • Have successfully completed eighteen (18) hours of graduate course work in the assigned teaching discipline.Be registered full-time doctoral student for the respective semester (nine semester credit hours during the fall semester, nine semester credit hours during the spring semester, six semester credit hours during the summer session or be performing supervised research with a UTRGV faculty member) or be registered in the required number of semester credit hours to fulfill the only remaining requirements on the degree plan.

Note: Should your department wish to pay at a higher rate, please reach out to HR-Compensation team to discuss the proposed amount.

 

Enrollment Exceptions:

The Graduate College will approve enrollment exceptions when a student is not enrolled full time when one of the justifications below applies:

  • Student only needs less than nine credit hours to complete degree.
  • Student already took one of the class offered in the semester and there no other classes available to complete nine credit hours (regular semester), six credit hours (summer sessions).
  • Student is doing supervised research with a faculty member (this only applies over the Summer Session).
