Dr. Alexis Racelis, associate professor in the UTRGV School of Earth, Environmental and Marine Sciences and director of Agroecology and Resilient Food Systems Program, has been appointed to the inaugural Agriculture Subcommittee of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Equity Commission.

STEM-Community Engagement grant takes shape at UTRGV

Congressional representatives and community leaders from ARISE and LUPE joined UTRGV faculty and students March 1, to kick off a $1.48M faculty-community partnership grant. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the grant – “Building Capacity: Transforming Undergraduate Education in STEM Through Culturally Relevant Pedagogy and Community Engagement” – is intended to help faculty develop inclusive, culturally relevant teaching practices. It also is geared to help faculty implement effective community engagement and experiential learning in STEM.
Improving undergrad STEM education at Hispanic Serving Institutions

A new project at one of the nation’s largest Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) is exploring the possibility of adding a certification to a student’s diploma if they take a certain number of courses in Spanish within a discipline or degree plan. Under the project, faculty at the University of Texas-Rio Grande would offer students the opportunity to take core (“gateway”) courses in math and biology in a Spanish and/or bilingual format.
NSF awards UTRGV College of Sciences grant for STEM-HSI project

UTRGV’S College of Sciences was recently awarded a grant for its project, “ Transforming Undergraduate Education in STEM Through Culturally Relevant Pedagogy and Community Engagement,” from the National Science Foundation. The NSF’s Improving Undergraduate STEM Education: Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Program award to UTRGV was one of 31 issued to other Hispanic-serving institutionsthat proposed research focusing on the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.
