The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is always growing. We currently have several new buildings under design and construction as well as existing areas being renovated.

Science Building (Completed in 2018)

The approximately 115,000 gross square feet facility will serve students throughout the region and support various STEM disciplines including biology, physics, chemistry, math, pre-med, and environmental studies. The facility will increase classroom capacity and provide additional instructional and research laboratories. The project will be built with new learning technologies and constructed to provide space that is adaptable to new and future learning realities and pedagogies so that students can take courses from either Edinburg or Brownsville campuses through the use of interactive technology. This new facility is being constructed adjacent to the existing Science building and will connect to it. It will have the following:

• Chemistry Labs
• Biology Labs
• Autoclave
• Classrooms

Interdisciplinary Engineering & Academic Building (Completed in 2018)

The approximately 53,398 gross square feet facility will serve students throughout the region and support engineering and academic studies. The facility will increase classroom capacity and will provide additional instructional teaching labs, computer labs, and student and faculty offices. This new facility is being constructed adjacent to the Physical Science building, south of the Library. It will have the following:

• Engineering Labs
• Computer Labs
• Classrooms

School of Medicine Team Based Learning Center (Under Construction)

The UTRGV School of Medicine has experienced rapid growth across the clinical, academic, and research missions. We have hit capacity and have outgrown our current, recently constructed building since first opening our doors in the summer of 2016 on the Edinburg campus. The new building will be an extension of the existing School of Medicine and will consist of a Team Based Learning interprofessional education flex room, problem based instruction rooms, private and individual student study and support space, and faculty administrative office. The design will feature flexible classrooms with modern technology which are needed to provide the kind of educational experience mandated by the accrediting board. The new building will strengthen and expand the distance learning program, which is essential for the University. UTRGV envisions this building to be a destination and will employ innovative and flexible modern learning environments.

Music, Science & Learning Center (Completed in 2018)

The approximately 102,500 gross square foot facility will serve students throughout the region and support general academics, music instruction and recitals, science and teaching labs, and provide flexible student and collaboration space. The facility will relocate functions currently located in leased space and will consolidate into one building creating efficiencies. It will have the following:

• Music practice rooms & rehearsal halls
• Computer Labs
• Science & Chemistry Labs
• Classrooms

Interdisciplinary Academic Building (Completed in 2019)

The approximately 55,509 gross square feet facility will serve students throughout the region and support student success departments, general academic studies, as well as physics related programs. The facility will increase classroom capacity and will provide additional instructional teaching labs, computer labs, staff and faculty offices. This new facility is being constructed on the south side of campus along West University Boulevard. It will have the following:

• General Classrooms
• Computer Labs
• Mathematics Lab
• Physics Labs
• Faculty offices
• Student Success Department

Institute of Neuroscience Project (Under Construction)

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine is planning, through Permanent University Funds (PUF), to construct a new Institute of Neuroscience facility that will increase the clinical and research presence in Harlingen, Texas. The facility will cost an estimated $30 million and will be built on 35 acres of land located southwest of the Clinical Education Building. The new facility advances one of the core research priorities for the UTRGV School of Medicine. It will add approximately 22,969 net assignable square feet and will help alleviate the current space demand in clinical and research areas. It will house dry research labs, clinical and clinical research space, core imaging, a therapy center, administrative support, collaborative areas, and community focused spaces. UTRGV plans to construct an approximately 60,000 GSF facility in two to three phases, over several years, to be a designated center for research on brain health and other aspects of neurosciences. The current project, or first phase, is planned at approximately 32,570 GSF. The project supports the institution's Strategic Plan and conforms and adheres to the current approved UTRGV Campus Master Plan for a distributed university model.
