My Bilingual classes taught me that my language is much more than what I speak. As a future educator, I learned that growing students' linguistic repertories without oppressing them, can invite students into a learning space that has often viewed them as visitors to, rather than owners of, the classroom
These bilingual classes made me feel seen and recognized. It was like a celebration of our Chicano culture when most of the time by tacit agreement school tramples on our bicultural background. We were finally told thath knowing two languages was valuable. These classes allow our brains to explore our bilingual thoughts unrestrained by having to conform to onlyl one language. It might sound like a minor detail but it makes a huge difference!
The acceptance of my own language use in the classroom has been a very positive experience. Allowing me to use my full linguistic repertoire has provided a safe environment to explore my own background knowledge and has better prepared me to make cognitive connections with the text, self, and world.
