Language can determine one’s success or failure in important situations. In places like courts of law, hospitals, and governmental institutions, communication may help you move forward or keep you from advancing. In the United States, the lack of English proficiency may keep a person from advancing or from receiving what they need or deserve. In such situations, translators and interpreters can bridge the language gap and help improve the lives of others. Yet, across Texas and the United States, the number of interpreters and translators is increasingly short.

Our 100% Online Master of Arts in Spanish Translation and Interpreting program prepares students to serve as skilled professionals in both interpreting and translation. The program is delivered entirely online and is designed to be completed in about two years of full-time study. Its structure includes core courses in translation and interpreting, options for specialized certificates in areas such as court and healthcare interpreting, and the ability to choose a professional or research track, allowing students to tailor their experience to their career goals.

A Program Designed for Professional Practice

Students enrolled in the MA in Spanish Translation and Interpreting develop a thorough knowledge of both translation and interpretationng. Thus, our program allows students to explore professional fields that require their language skills, such as the legal, healthcare, finance, and literary industries.  In addition, students gain experience through practical exercises, both written and oral.

Thus, our program shines because it focuses on real-world use, not just textbook theory.

For those who are interested in the academic pursuit of translation and interpreting, our program provides the option of a research track. This track includes much practical training, but it also provides a strong scholarly component developed through an individualized research project.

Court Interpreting: A Growing Need in the Legal System

Increasingly, students in our programs are interested in developing their court interpreting skills as a way to prepare for eventual certification or licensure in the professional world. They understand that a  court interpreter guarantees that defendants, witnesses, and all other participants are able to understand what is happening during court proceedings.

This is especially important in Texas, where many cases require interpreters due to defendants' limited English-language skills.

The problem is that although demand for court interpreters is high, licensed professionals are hard to find in certain Texas counties. According to local authorities, it is becoming challenging to find court interpreters near. The shortage has real consequences: delayed hearings, higher costs, and in some cases, barriers that stop people from sometimes even showing up.

This is why professional interpreters matter. It makes a difference in peoples’ lives. It can also be financially rewarding--the highest 10 percent Interpreters and translators in the U.S. earn over $80,000 annually.

The Certificate Program in Court Interpreting is specifically designed to train students to perform  in those environments.

Flexible Pathways for a Meaningful Career

The MA in Spanish Translation and Interpreting delivers flexibility in both structure and outcomes. Since it is offered entirely online, students can further their education without having to put their professional or personal lives on hold. The opportunity for obtaining a graduate certificate in addition to their MA also gives students the ability to formulate a specific career path depending on their goals.

Moving Forward

Demand for professional interpreters and translators provides an opportunity for bilingual professionals to impact society in a positive, meaningful way. There is no shortage of places where the need for competent interpreting and translation skills is vital.

If you are prepared to make your way in this challenging, but fulfilling profession, then the MA in Spanish Translation and Interpreting could be just what you need.

Join a vibrant and supportive community of translators and interpreters who are making a real difference every day. Your skills can open doors for others, promote understanding, and help build a more inclusive society.
