Three people are shown in a medical training classroom, working with surgical instruments and anatomical models.
A large group of people sit around a large conference table during a meeting.

PGY 1 & 2

The emphasis during the PGY1 and PGY2 years is the primary care of surgical patients while spending time in the operating room learning general surgery. The junior surgical residents are directly responsible for preoperative and postoperative care along with progressive operative responsibilities.

Patient care will be supervised by the senior resident and attending staff. As a result, junior surgical residents can assume responsibilities for primary patient care in a learning environment under the supervision of experienced surgical personnel. Junior residents will become familiar with the physiologic and metabolic problems that face each surgical patient. Significant operative experience will be obtained under the direct supervision of senior residents and attending surgeons.

PGY 3

During this year, residents focus on gaining experience on the development of advanced surgical judgment in and out of the operating room. The transition from junior to senior resident includes assuming responsibility for the day-to-day activities of the surgical inpatients and directly supervising the junior resident staff. Senior residents are also granted more autonomy in the operating room.

PGY 4 & 5

During PGY 4 and PGY 5, residents hone their surgical judgment and skill while acting as junior attendings. Responsibilities include the supervision and teaching of all junior residents and medical students. In the operating room, the senior residents will help teach core general surgery principles to the junior residents while also performing more complex surgical procedures themselves.

Residents have elective time available during the fourth year to participate in a specialty of their choice or to pursue away rotations. Rotations include the surgical ICU, trauma, general surgery (to include endocrine, hepatobiliary, surgical oncology), endoscopy, research, plastics, cardiothoracic, vascular, head and neck, transplant, and pediatric surgery.
