The Office of Academic Advising and Academic Support
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) School of Medicine offers students integrated and effective academic advising. Our team includes SOM faculty members, course and clerkship directors, student affairs staff, and counseling and tutorial services to ensure medical students move forward in their degree path and can get academic counseling from academic advisors. We focus on providing medical students with professional guidance and educational resources to enhance their academic and professional experience.
Open Door Policy:
The Director of the Office of Academic Advising, the educational learning specialist and Academic Advisors have no role in evaluation and promotion. They have an open-door policy and look forward to assisting you with academic advising needs.

Tips For Medical Student Success
- Seek help/assistance as soon as you perceive a need.
- Do pre-reading prior to classes, labs, clinical, and PBL.
- Actively participate in all scheduled activities.
- Engage in post-lecture reviews.
- Use all or as many resources provided by the School of Medicine.
- Practice effective time management and organizational skills.
- Factor in healthy habits including eating, sleeping, and engaging in recreational activities.
Cost To Students
- Services are at no additional fees and available to all medical students enrolled at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine.
- All academic support services are available at the Edinburg Team Based Learning Center (ETBLC), Harlingen Clinical Education Building, in person and on-line or at mutually agreed locations.
- Services are available to students as many times as needed.
- Some services, such as private and group tutoring have flexible scheduling and are convenient for the medical student’s schedule.
- All academic support services are available at the Edinburg Medical Education Building (EMBL) or at mutually agreed locations.
