MISSION
The Gulf Scholars Program at UTRGV aims to prepare student scholars to be change agents that engage in participatory action to help create a more sustainable, resilient, and socially just Gulf region.
What is the Gulf Scholars Program?
Coordinated by the School of Interdisciplinary Programs and Community Engagement (SIPCE) and funded by the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine, the Gulf Scholars Program (GSP) engages student scholars in interdisciplinary, community-based, and service-learning curricular programming focused on exploring the Food-Energy-Water (FEW) Nexus. Through this framework, student scholars study and address the environmental, sustainability, and social justice issues in the Gulf region and examine the role that food, energy, and water play in their own lives, families, and communities.
The GSP invites student scholars to explore these topics with curated multiple workshop series, guest speakers, and one-on-one mentorship with members of the Leadership Team that specialize in disciplines such as the arts and humanities, business, engineering, public administration, and the sciences. GSP student scholars also gain hands-on experience through collaborations with community partners and individual Gulf Impact Projects.
