The Minor in Environmental Studies
The Environmental Studies Program is a learning community of students and faculty who use the tools of the humanities and social sciences to identify, name, explain, and analyze the causes of our global ecological crisis. The program supports interdisciplinary, community-engaged approaches to designing and implementing solutions to this crisis that are humane, just, and sustainable. Students take courses across four categories: (1) environmental studies core, which is ENST 1301, (2) environmental science, (3) environmental humanities, and (4) environmental justice, public policy, and political economy. The knowledge students acquire in these categories applies to all other majors and enhances post-graduate opportunities. Graduates of the program know the importance of social responsibility and are critical thinkers who can analyze quantitative and qualitative data to help solve pressing problems. The minor in Environmental Studies teaches information, values, and skills that are prized by employers.
The Minor in Environmental Studies consists of 18 credit hours spread across four categories:
- Environmental Studies Core - 3 Credit Hours (ENST 1301 Introduction to Environmental Studies)
- Environmental Science - 3 to 8 Credit Hours
- Environmental Humanities - 3 to 9 Credit Hours
- Environmental Justice, Public Policy, and Political Economy - 3 to 9 Credit Hours

Environmental Studies (ENST) Courses
ENST 1301 Introduction to Environmental Studies
An introduction to environment-human interactions based on an integrated overview of various perspectives mainly from the social sciences and humanities. This trans-disciplinary course is for students in any major and covers knowledge and concepts about environmental topics, challenges, and solutions.
Prerequisites: None
ENST 1301 satisfies 3 credit hours of experiential learning in the core curriculum (section 090).
ENST 4380 Environmental Studies Directed Research
Designed to give students experience in research or in-depth theoretical/empirical readings in a substantive area in Environmental Studies not normally covered within standard courses. Research projects or advanced readings will vary according to student interest and faculty availability.
Prerequisites: None
ENST 4390 Environmental Studies Internship
Extensive practical application of environmental studies knowledge and skills in the larger community. Each student will work closely with one or more professionals working on a project or in a topical area involving one or more environmental or sustainability issues. This will enable students to learn in-depth about the specific issue(s) and gain research experience and/or professional skills.
