One of the most active college organizations for Latino theatre in the United States, LTI has been creating opportunities for Latino (or Latinx) theatre artists and enthusiasts since 2010. Founded to produce Spanish-language theatre for children in South Texas and northern Mexico, LTI has since expanded and now tours original theatre in great variety. The group has performed in New York (twice), Chicago, Houston (twice), San Diego, New Orleans (four times), San Antonio, Austin (twice), and other cities. LTI is a transnational, bilingual and community-responsive group whose shows and methods are reviewed, studied and discussed in national and international presentations, articles, essays, and books.

We work with educators, journalists and artists from several different countries and with civil rights and humanitarian organizations, such as LUPE and ARISE. We foster new scripts through commissions, readings and productions; publish essays in scholarly journals and discuss our work at conferences, including the International Conference on Border Studies, NACCS, and PCA/ACA. We support visiting artists, such as Teatro Milagro and Teatro Luna, and often travel to see plays and meet theatre people in other places.

LTI is about the public celebration and creative-critical exploration of Latino culture in both new and traditional forms. We do community events, such as parades, face painting, shows for children, and fundraising – our members learn to raise money and to promote and produce theatre; this is essential to our ethos and creative process in our exciting borderland intersection of languages, cultures, histories, politics, philosophies, religions and economies.

About our rich Latino community: over 92% of people in Hidalgo county are Latino, and Spanish is spoken in over 84% of households, based on current U.S. Census figures. Mexico is only a few steps from the UTRGV campus, so our theatre community includes northern Tamaulipas, with its border cities of Matamoros and Reynosa, as well as Cameron and Willacy Counties (both are about 90% Latino).

We’re sponsored by the Department of Theatre, the College of Fine Arts, and the Center for Latin American Arts at UTRGV.

We meet every Wednesday at 12:15 in ELABS 107.

No Spanish required.

Latino Theatre Initiatives

Nuestros miembros aprenden a recaudar fondos y a promover y producir teatro.
