Howard Hughes Medical Institute's (HHMI) Photo

The UTRGV Science Education Program funded by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's (HHMI) Pre-college and Undergraduate Science Education Grant program is a comprehensive effort to enhance the quality of science education at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). The overarching goal of the program is to increase the number of underrepresented who pursue a graduate education in Science research subsequently increasing the number of highly educated underrepresented individuals in the scientific work force.

The program focuses on improving access to science and engineering careers for students throughout the Rio Grande Valley and on improving the undergraduate experience for science and engineering students at UTRGV. The program utilizes a three pronged approach:

  • Undergraduate Research and Professional Development Training Program
  • Curriculum, Equipment and Laboratory Development to foster inquiry
  • Pre-College Outreach to foster interest in science and science careers
