Facilities
Collections
We maintain collections of birds, plants, invertebrates, fish and insects in which students and/or researchers can utilize.
Field Stations
We currently operate a number of field stations taking advantage of our unique geographic location adjacent to the Gulf of Mexico and the tropics.
Many of our classes on the Brownsville campus utilize Sabal Palms Sanctuary. It is operated by the Gorgas Science Foundation and UTRGV, and offers a chance to study one of the last remaining native sabal palm stands in the US.
Rancho del Cielo is our field station in the cloud forests of Mexico. It is operated by the Gorgas Science Foundation and UTRGV, and offers a unique opportunity to study the flora and fauna in the northernmost cloud forest in central America. it is located within the El Cielo Biosphere.
Another field station is located at the base of Rancho del Cielo in lowland tropical deciduous forest. Cielito is located along the Rio Sabinas.
Along the Gulf Coast, we have two field stations to support our marine and coastal biological programs. One is located on South Padre Island and the other is at Port Mansfield. Students and researchers utilize these facilities throughout the year.
