Preparing for a Virtual Interview

  • Before your interview, take time to research the organization and come prepared with questions.
  • Select the location where you will take the interview, ideally a quiet, private, and well-lit spot, free from possible interruptions and visual distractions.
  • Test your technology. Ensure that your internet connection is stable, and check that your computer camera and microphone are working. Close unnecessary web browsers and applications.
  • Be yourself! Try to connect with the interviewer, whether by sharing a story about a common interest or asking a question. This can help you stand out in the crowd while showing a little more of your personality. Be expressive when answering questions, sit up straight, smile, and keep the camera at eye level. Keep your focus on the camera when talking.
  • Dress professionally. Even though the interview is virtual, you should dress in the same attire you would wear for an in-person interview. See tips on professional attire.
  • Let interviewers know if you cannot hear them or if you need a question repeated. Interruptions happen! If something unexpected happens, let your interviewers know. Take a moment to handle the situation, and come back ready to finish strong.
  • After the event, follow-up with a professional thank you email to your interviewer. This will remind them of your encounter and help you maintain a positive relationship for the future.

Common Virtual Interview Platforms

  • Zoom
  • Cisco Webex
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Skype
  • Google Meet

Note, some interview schedules will be available for sign-up in Handshake, but the interview itself will not take place in the system. The employer with whom you are interviewing should provide instructions for how to access the interview.
