LEAD Internship Initiative
The LEAD Internship Initiative is a collaboration between Workforce Solutions (WFS), The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) and employers who can offer paid internships to postsecondary UTRGV students with productive and meaningful work assignments and learning components related to their major. Students will gain professional soft skills knowledge, job interview skills, and paid work experience. It is an opportunity for students to gain a competitive edge to fill high-demand jobs in the region and meet employers’ needs.
The internship program is an 8–week work period in which students gain work experience while enrolled in school. In some cases, students may enroll in an internship course (although not required) in addition to their work experience and earn income to support their education.
PROGRAM DETAILS:
- Fall 2023 start date
- 8-week internship duration
- Stipend of $12.00/hr for a total of 160 hours
- Internships available in marketing, graphic design, manufacturing, web development, and more!
Student Eligibility
Students who participate in the internship program must meet the following qualifications:
- Must be pursuing an undergraduate degree at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley
- Must be a current resident of Hidalgo, Willacy or Starr County
- Must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
- Must meet Military Selective Service Registration (males only)
- Must be eligible to work in the United States
- International students may be considered if employer is willing to hire candidates that are temporarily authorized to work for a defined period in their field of study (e.g. for a job/internship under OPT/CPT)
Finding Internships on Handshake
The Career Center utilizes different "labels" to help categorize jobs and internships that we have helped source. The LEAD Internship Initiative has a designated Handshake label (titled "lead-internship-initiative") for students to effectively identify available internships under the program. To quickly find positions, please read instructions below.

- Navigate to Jobs on the left navigation bar
- Select "All filters" on the middle navigation bar
- Scroll to the bottom section titled Labeled by your school and search "lead-internship-intitiative"
- All available internships under the program will population
