Space Technology, Materials, and Medicine

From massive orbiting satellites to molecules undetectable without a nanoscope, this category of space science covers a board spectrum of the materials that allow humans to explore the cosmos beyond our stratosphere.

Nanoscience

Nanoscience is the study of the properties of matter at the atomic and molecular level. Matter on the nanometer scale, approximately 1,000 times smaller than the width of human hair, exhibits unique properties that enable novel innovative applications. These scientist utilize state-of-the-art equipment to observe, measure, manipulate, and manufacture matter at the nanometer scale.

Dr. Karen Martirosyan is founding director of the Advanced Nanoscience Laboratory at UTRGV. His research focuses on leveraging high-energy systems to produce materials for various applications in the energy, environmental, biomedical, and space sciences. He has produced more than 170 papers and 20 patents.
The Advanced Nanoscience Laboratory occupies three research laboratories comprising nearly 3,000 sq ft, and is equipped with industry-leading instruments and facilities for the fabrication and testing of nanoparticles and nano composite materials. Some of the notable instruments include the EverCool II cryogen-free Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS), the Bruker ELEXSYS Electron Paramagnetic Resonance spectrometer, the Bruker D2 PHASER second generation X-ray diffractometer, among numerous others.

Space Technology

Space technology is used to support or conduct activities in space, benefittng astronomy and planetary science. This can includes vehicles (spacecraft, satellites, stations and orbital launching), deep-space communication, in-space propulsion, and a wide range of other technologies that support infrastructure and procedures.

Dr. Teviet Creighton is specializes in development of space technology, in addition to being aa theoretical astrophysicist. He leads federally-funded research and development program STARGATE aimed at achieving novel space technology.

The Spacecraft Tracking and Astronomical Research into Gigahertz Astrophysical Transient Emission (STARGATE) project at UTRGV is a research and development program aimed at developing technologies for space exploration and commercilization.

Dr. Creighton works with UTRGV Center for Innovation and Commercialization to develop roadmaps for space technology commercialization and education programs for space technology entrepreneurship.
