JULY 2024
▶ An article in the September 2024 issue of Sky & Telescope Magazine shines a light on Dr. Rivera-Sandoval's research using space and ground based telescopes to monitor the peculiar outburst behavior of ultracompact white dwarf ASASSN-21au.
▶ NA-ROAD announces selection of 10 WGAP projects with funding from the Heising-Simmons Foundation. STSSI Education Lead Dr. Rivera-Sandoval aims to make astronomy more accessible to residents near the southern Texas border through Ellas y las Estrellas project.
▶ NASA MUREP MPLAN announces cohort of 2024 awardees, each receding $50,000 as well as resources and guidance from NASA experts. STSSI member Dr. Martirosyan among awardees for research project “Tuneable NanoEnergetic Microthruster Cartridges”.
JUNE 2024
▶ STSSI's Profession Outreach Lead Dr. Eloi Camprubi awarded $300,000 NASA Research Initiation Award. The 2-year grant funds project that aims to understanding the surficial chemistry of Europa, Jupiter's moon.
▶ On June 20, STSSI joined the South Texas Astronomical Society in celebration of the anniversaries of the Apollo 11 Moon landing, the Viking 1 Mars landing and five-years of successful community involvement.
MAY 2024
▶ The South Texas Space Science Institute along with 200 other vendors spotlighted Brownsville's innovation, arts, and local businesses in downtown on May 31. More than 10,000 attendees from across the Rio Grande Valley experienced the inaugural Space Fest hosted by the GBIC and the BCVB.
APRIL 2024
▶ Despite overcast skies, hundreds of curious people gathered on the UTRGV Brownsville and Edinburg campuses on Monday, April 8 to catch a glimpse of the midday solar eclipse during the Science in Motion: Solar Eclipse Watch Party hosted in collaboration with STSSI, the Center of Excellence in STEM Education, the Department of Physics & Astronomy and the local chapter of the Society of Physics Students.
