South Texas Astronomical Society (STARS) is a community-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Brownsville, Texas. STSSI partners with STARS to help the organization achieve its goals. STARS' mission is to ignite curiosity, inspire exploration, and empower the Rio Grande Valley community through space science and STEM education. This mission is accomplished by providing hands-on space science and STEM education through a variety of programs for students and community members of all ages.
These programs empower students from traditionally under-served and under-represented communities to pursue careers in STEM and enhance scientific literacy within the region.

A successful research organization does not operate in a vacuum. To thrive, it must build and sustain strong connections to other educational institutions and research faciities and foster an open exchange of ideas and create a sense of community.
Held approximately once a month, this hour-long event features regional, national and international experts and speakers presenting on various topics, including space science specific subjects as well as other intellectually intriguing topics. The event is free and open to the public.
STSSI welcomes and supports visits from researchers across the globe to interact with our faculty and students on topics of mutual interest.
STSSI also plans to hold scientific workshops every couple of years on topics that align with the research priorities of the institute or that are relevant to the space science community at that time.
