Present at the Research Symposium

5th Annual UTRGV SOM Research Symposium:
International Conference on Health Disparities

UTRGV School of Medicine is pleased to announce this call for abstracts for our Annual Research Symposium to highlight research, treatment and recovery from opioid and alcohol use disorders and related health disparities.

The UTRGV School of Medicine’s 5th Annual Research Symposium will be held:

Date: September 9-10, 2022

Location: Mission Event Center (Mission, TX)

Theme: UTRGV International Conference on Health Disparities: Treatment and Recovery from Opioid and Alcohol Use Disorders and Related Comorbidities (ICHD-Recover).

Opioid and alcohol misuse and use disorders represent a major national challenge, which is particularly severe for underserved minority populations for whom the consequences of health disparities were tragically demonstrated by the Covid-19 pandemic. Our research symposium is an opportunity to bringing together national leaders, local scientists, and community stakeholders to address the pressing public health problem of health disparities in opioid and alcohol use disorder among disadvantaged minorities, highlighting local issues and increasing knowledge of US-Mexico border health disparities. Our research symposium also aims at building community capacity for global minority health and health disparities research and at promoting research collaboration, implementation of science based, culturally relevant treatment approaches, and engaging trainees from underrepresented population.

Participants do not have to be affiliated with UTRGV School of Medicine. Anyone with an interest in presenting information on their research/program, networking and expanding scientific and professional knowledge in promoting health equity are encouraged to participate. We welcome submissions across all disciplines and levels including, students, faculty, government agencies, community organizations, health care and research institutions.

Since we know the quantity of excellent research/programs in our area is considerable, in our effort to build community, we plan to accept as many abstracts for posters and oral presentations as our space allows.

Selection Process

Submissions will undergo peer review by the symposium’s scientific committee. Ratings will be based on the overall quality of the abstract, the balance and theme of the program agenda and the following criteria 1) Alignment of subject matter with symposium theme 2) Innovation and Importance to disparities research in that it introduces a new concept or sheds light on a research/program of relevance to community 3) Approach/Methodology are appropriate 4) Lessons Learned/Conclusions have potential to impact knowledge of health disparities in region, practice implications are relevant to broader community. Also, as determined by the Scientific Committee, some abstracts will be selected for oral/flash talk presentations. More information will be provided with the release of the “Presentation Guidelines”.
