  • Explorations Geophysics (oil, gas, and water), Salt tectonics modeling (Numerical Modeling), and basin analysis

Higher-Education

  • 1993 Ph.D. Geophysics, Texas A&M University
  • 1988 M.S. Geophysics, University of Oklahoma
  • 1984 Graduate Certification Exploration Geology and Geophysics, Universidad de San Carlos
  • 1983 B.S. Electrical Engineer, Universidad de San Carlos

Research Overview

He served as interim chair of the Department of Physics and Geology at UTPA from January 2003 to May 2007 and as an assistant chair at UTPA from August 2012 to August 2015. During the first UTRGV's academic year (August 2015 to August 2016), he served as the advisor for the Bachelor of Science in Physics and minors in Physics & Physical Science. Dr. Mazariegos received his Ph.D. (Geophysics) from Texas A&M University, his M.S. (Geophysics) from the University of Oklahoma, his Graduate Diploma as an Exploration Geologist and his B.S. (Electrical Engineering) from the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, Guatemala. Dr. Mazariegos received the Ph.D. Dissertation Award from the U.S. National Committee on Rock Mechanics for Best Dissertation (significant, original contribution): “Mechanical Modeling of the Evolution of Salt Structures.” His research areas include salt tectonics modeling, exploration geophysics for oil and groundwater prospecting, GIS, GPS, and remote sensing technology applied to agriculture and coastal dynamics. Before joining UTPA he worked as a geophysicist for Hadson Petroleum International, Marathon Oil Company, and the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Guatemala. Dr. Mazariegos has taught courses in physical science, physical geography, physical geology, historical geology, structural geology, Introduction to Geographic Information Systems, Applications of Geographic Information Systems and undergraduate research in geosciences.
