Research Overview

The Bandyopadhyay lab pursues a wide range of research interests that include food/agricultural materials, natural products, green & medicinal organic chemistry. Specific efforts have been inspired by botanicals with an emphasis on the identification of phytochemicals and phytoceuticals from marine and plant resources including fruits and vegetables as they relate to human health and diseases. One of the major foci of his research is to determine the composition, structure, and properties of bio-privileged molecules that are present in various natural resources including food/agricultural/forestry waste through extraction, fractionation, isolation, and characterization with broader impact in the fields ranging from industrially privileged chemicals to pharmacologically relevant compounds. Besides, his lab is also aimed at understanding some of the basic features of protein-ligand interactions in the design, in silico validation, and synthesis of novel small molecule inhibitors as well as chemical modification of bio-products leading to the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). Research related to functional foods, phytonutrients, and aroma compounds to identify a new chemical entity (NCE) is also his point of interest. The Bandyopadhyay lab is committed to environmental safety. Consequently, new methodology development following eco-friendly routes is investigated. Along the way, group members will be involved in various aspects of drug development research that comprised of functional foods and botanicals, chemical modification of natural products to develop new semi-synthetic compounds with higher potency and reduced toxicity (side effects), design and synthesis of inhibitors as anticancer agents, as well as the development of greener methodologies aiming to the synthesis of novel pharmacophores.
