Agroecology

The University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley has recently established a research and teaching program in Agroecology. Agroecology is the study of ecological processes that operate in production systems. The Agroecology program at UTRGV combines student-centered research, education, and community engagement in various projects to address locally relevant issues that affect agroecosystems in South Texas, including in sustainable agriculture, community supported agriculture, urban forestry, and sustainable food systems.

Center for Subtropical Studies

Following UTRGV's creation, a major restructuring and reorganization of affiliated Centers and Institutes took place. The Center for Subtropical Studies was largely supplanted by the   Lower Rio Grande Valley Sustainability Network  and other related initiatives.

SHIP-GEO: Stimulating Hispanic Participation in the Geosciences

The goal of UTRGV SHIP-GEO (funded by National Science Foundation; NSF Award#1600585) is to contribute to diversifying and reducing the predicted shortage in the US geoscience workforce (Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences) for the coming decade. The project’s goal will be accomplished by implementing activities geared toward student awareness, recruitment and retention, and sustaining the activities beyond the award period.

Teacher Certification Program (UTEACH)

UTRGV UTeach is the secondary teacher preparation program for science and mathematics majors at UTRGV. The program has offices, classroom space, faculty and staff, and a student workroom/instructional resource room on both campuses. The purpose of the program is to prepare highly qualified science and mathematics teachers according to the UTeach model developed at The University of Texas at Austin. During its five-year period as a replication grant, UTRGV UTeach graduated 92 students and in its fifth year surpassed all UTeach programs in the nation with an active enrollment of 485 students.
