Ethics Bowl
The Ethics Bowl is an intercollegiate debate competition organized by the APPE (Association for Practical and Professional Ethics). The Philosophy Department at UTRGV has been consistently sending teams to compete in the Texas Regionals for the past several years. Our aim is to win a bid for the National Competitions and place in the podium there. Texas regionals are held in November in San Antonio while Nationals are usually held in February in different venues. Our teams are composed of undergraduate students from any major, usually from both campuses. We hold training sessions during the spring and fall and occasionally hold public training debates. Parallel to our team’s efforts, students are running an Ethics Bowl Club that organizes events to train, promote and fundraise for our team(s), as well as to establish and promote the importance of ethics in general and to provide some generational continuity to our team(s). In these competitions, real world controversial cases are prepared and debated, so being part of the team or the club will allow you to prepare yourself for ethical argument construction and analysis and rhetorical delivery. Also, you might sharpen your knowledge of Ethical normative systems and your argumentative skills. If you are an undergraduate at UTRGV (any major) and you are interested in participating in the club or team, please contact Dr. Christopher J. Gomez at christopher.gomez1@utrgv.edu
