2023 STEM Teacher National Workshop

STEM Teacher Workshop participants

The 2023 MECIS K-12 STEM Teacher National Workshop is an excellent opportunity for K-12 Educators, STEM Learning Coordinators, CTE Directors, Transportation and Railway Safety Educators, and Summer Camp Coordinators to learn how to incorporate Transportation Engineering in the classroom as a way to deliver STEM concepts to students of all grade levels.

During the one-day workshop, participants will be introduced to Railway Safety STEM - Elementary, Middle School, and High School curricula developed by UTCRS faculty and staff. Participants will learn to implement all the UTCRS curricula activities through hands-on training using Magnetic Levitation (MagLev) Kits, LEGO Mindstorms Robotics kits, LEGO Spike Prime Robotics, and Pi-top robotics using Pi-block and Python Programming (Raspberry-pi-Based). Our goal is to provide participants with hands-on experience, grade appropriate UTCRS curriculum and preparation to develop their own unique challenges for use within their classrooms, day-camps, and summer camps.

Saturday May 20, 2023 (8AM-5PM)

Lunch (12:30–1:30PM)

In our sessions, you will learn ways to implement STEM concepts with emphasis on transportation-related engineering and technology applications in the classroom. The workshop provides you with ideas that will allow your students to make the connection between STEM concepts and interactive hands-on experiences.

Session 1: Exploring with MagLevs and LEGO Education Kits

Curriculum incorporates magnetic levitation kits that involve STEM concepts such as magnetism and railway transportation. The curriculum also utilizes LEGO Education MINDSTORMS Kits that allow for interactive hands-on explanations of Newtonian Physics at an elementary level.

Session 2: Exploring with LEGO Spike Prime Robotics

LEGO SPIKE Prime Sets are the latest generation in Lego’s Education line. These Educational sets are the go-to STEM learning tool for grades 6-8 and are the replacement for the now-discontinued EV3 kits. The SPIKE Prime Sets will allow students to utilize high-level thinking to code robots for various operations providing a hands-on STEM learning adventure. Because these sets are fairly new, there are not many K-12 teachers trained on their use. This workshop offers teachers a unique opportunity to engage in hands-on training.

Session 3: Exploring with Pi-Top Robotics

The Pi-Top Robotics Kits are the latest technology in building a programming skill-set among High School students. This workshop will provide K-12 teachers with a unique opportunity to learn how to program using Raspberry-Pi-based robotic kits.

To better introduce participants to themes related to Transportation Engineering and Railway Safety in an interactive manner, all workshop sessions are hands-on. Please wear comfortable attire.

A registration fee of $60 USD will be required to complete your registration. This fee will provide you with the following services:

  • Enrollment in the one-day STEM workshop,
  • All levels of the developed UTCRS K-12 STEM Curricula,
  • Lunch and snacks throughout the day,
  • A University Transportation Center for Railway Safety (UTCRS) t-shirt,
  • All supplies needed for the one-day workshop,
  • A certificate of completion issued by the UTCRS.

Register early, space is limited. Register by submitting an online application at:
