MECIS Summer Camps
A major goal of the MECIS is to encourage K-12 students from groups traditionally underrepresented to consider careers in fields related to cyber-physical infrastructure systems (CIS). The one-week summer camps at UTRGV are designed to provide students with hands-on experience and basic subject knowledge and awareness of CIS thrusts (automation, sensors, and AI), while also relating it to real life engineering problem solving. Engaging students in STEM related curricula at an early age will help develop their skill sets and attract them to STEM fields. The summer camp program builds on the successful implementation of one of the largest transportation-focused STEM summer camps in the nation contributed to the USDOT-sponsored University Transportation Center for Railway Safety (UTCRS).
