Criminal Justice Internship Course

These instructions only apply to the following course:

Fall 2019 – (Edinburg Campus) Field Internship - CRIJ 4364-02

This class requires that each student: Complete 120 hours of internship work, Submit weekly work logs, Obtain one supervisor’s evaluation, Write a critic paper about their internship agency and Take an exit exam that covers policing, courts, corrections and criminology.

To apply for any available internships in the Edinburg/Hidalgo County area, you must complete a “Handshake” app (found in myUTRGV) profile that includes a resume (reviewed by the Career Center). Handshake is where UTRGV Career Center posts all available vacancies for jobs or internships.  If you do need assistance with a resume review, visit Career Center during the listed walk-in hours or schedule an appointment through Handshake.

Career Center (Edinburg Campus): Resume Review Walk-in Hours:

  • Wednesday – 12:00p.m.-3:30p.m.
  • Thursday – 12:00p.m.-3:30p.m.

If you plan to do your internship for credit in the Fall 2019 semester, you must to begin your search as soon as possible.  If you plan to apply to local, state, or federal government positions, there are often lengthy background checks required before you can start your internship.

John Kaufold, the UTRGV Internship Coordinator (john.kaufold@utrgv.edu), can provide details about any internships listed on Handshake.

Some agencies that promote internships include:

  • Texas Department of Public Safety
  • S. Marshals Service
  • Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Department
  • Evins Regional Juvenile Detention Center
  • Attorney General of Texas – Child Support Division

Applications are limited.  Additional internships may be listed on Handshake.

Once you have registered for Field Internship - CRIJ 4364.02 - CRN# 26414 (Edinburg Campus) follow these steps.

  1. Complete your profile in Handshake, with resume uploaded.
  2. Apply for one of the internships available in Handshake OR you may obtain an appropriate internship on your own if it is approved by the instructor, Robert Michael Magee (robert.magee@utrgv.edu)
  3. You must attend the first class on August 30, 2019, after that class meetings will be flexible.
  4. Students that do not have an internship by the Fall census date may be dropped from this course.
