The UTRGV Speech and Hearing Center was established in 1975 as a clinical training facility for students in the Communication Disorders program. The Center provides evaluation and treatment services to individuals with communication disorders while offering students hands-on experience under the supervision of licensed professionals.
Admission to the Speech and Hearing Center is based on factors such as the urgency of evaluation or treatment, the availability of alternative services, clinical space and personnel, and the individual's potential for improvement. The Center prioritizes patient care while also serving as a training environment for students in the Communication Disorders program.
The Center is open to the public and offers services at a reduced rate compared to private clinics. These reduced rates reflect the Center’s educational mission, where student clinicians provide services under the direct supervision of licensed and certified faculty.
The Speech and Hearing Center is part of the Department of Communication Disorders within the College of Health Professions at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. It serves two essential functions: providing high-quality speech, language, and hearing services to the community and offering students valuable supervised clinical experience to prepare them for careers in the field. While client needs are the top priority, the Center also ensures that students receive comprehensive training in a real-world clinical setting.
The Speech and Hearing Center provides services to individuals residing in the Rio Grande Valley and neighboring communities in Mexico. These services may include diagnostics, screenings, intervention, and consultation.
