Transfer Students

We’re excited to have you join our UTRGV family! Identifying your status as a transfer student is the first step in starting your journey with us. Whether you’re a Freshman Transfer—with fewer than 24 college credits, a Regular Transfer—with 24 or more college credits, or a Second-Degree Seeking student—returning to earn an additional degree, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

At UTRGV, we understand that each student’s path is unique, and we’re committed to making your transition as smooth as possible. Types of Transfer Students

  • Graduated from high school, homeschooled, or earned a GED. 
  • Enrolled in a college or university after high school graduation. 
  • Accumulated 0-23 college credit hours from a post-high school institution. 

  • Graduated from high school, homeschooled, or earned a GED. 
  • Enrolled in a college or university after high school graduation. 
  • Accumulated 24+ college credit hours from a post-high school institution. 

  • Graduated with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university other than UTPA or UTRGV.
  • Interested in pursuing a second bachelor’s degree in a different major.

As per the Texas Education Code, you have the option for an "Academic Fresh Start," excluding credits or grades earned 10 or more years before the semester you seek enrollment. Conditions include: 
  • Available only once. 
  • Texas residency is required. 
  • Submission of all official transcripts, regardless of prior Academic Fresh Start. 
  • Exclusion of undergraduate coursework from GPA if taken 10+ years before the request. 
  • Excluded coursework remains on record for audit purposes but doesn't count toward prerequisites, or graduation, and may impact eligibility for NCAA, Veterans Administration, or financial aid. 
  • Existing degree plans considering excluded coursework become invalid. 
  • The granted Academic Fresh Start is irreversible.

Applying to UTRGV is simple, and we're here to guide you through every step. Check out the steps below to learn how to apply and take the first steps toward becoming a UTRGV student. We can't wait to have you join us!

  • Submit a Transfer application through ApplyTexas.org.  
  • Submit all transfer coursework: 
    • Coursework from U.S. institutions: Submit official college transcripts from all colleges/universities attended directly from the college/university to UTRGV. 
    • Coursework from foreign institutions: Send your foreign transcript to get evaluated by one of the following approved companies: The Evaluation Company (formerly SPANTRAN), Foreign Credentials Service of America (FCSA), World Education Services (WES), or International Education Evaluation (IEE) and have the evaluation company send the report directly to UTRGV.
  • Submit proof of high school completion: 
    • Graduates from a U.S. high school/homeschool: Submit official high school transcript indicating graduation plan, GPA, graduation date, and class rank (if applicable)  
    • Graduates with a High School equivalency certificate (GED): Submit your GED certificate and your High School transcript containing any courses completed before earning the GED.  
    • Graduates from a foreign high school: Send your foreign transcript to get evaluated by one of the following approved companies: The Evaluation Company (formerly SPANTRAN), Foreign Credentials Service of America (FCSA), World Education Services (WES), or International Education Evaluation (IEE) and have the evaluation company send the report directly to UTRGV.
  • For 2025-2026, UTRGV remains test optional. If you took ACT/SAT, contact the testing agency to send us your official scores. Superscores accepted. (ACT code: 6991, SAT code: 6568).  
Additional items for international applicants:
  • Submit $50 application fee through the UTRGV Marketplace.  
  • Submit proof of English language proficiency by one of the following companies: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), DUOLINGO English Test, IELTS, or Pearson’s PTE Academic unless you qualify for an exemption. 

  • Submit a Transfer application through ApplyTexas.org.  
  • Submit all transfer coursework: 
    • Coursework from U.S. institutions: Submit official college transcripts from all colleges/universities attended directly from the college/university to UTRGV.

If you have not graduated but will have earned your bachelor's degree by the start of your application term, submit a letter from your college/university indicating that you have applied for graduation, in addition to the official college transcript.

  • Submit the Request for Academic Fresh Start form to admissions@utrgv.edu upon receipt of the email from UTRGV confirming the application was received.

Questions regarding your coursework can be addressed to your advisor upon admission. Any discrepancies or corrections needed to your transfer coursework must be finalized within your first term at UTRGV.

The decision to transfer to a four-year university requires careful planning. At UTRGV, we’ll help make your transfer here as seamless as possible by guiding you through the application process, offering a personalized evaluation of credits earned, and helping with academic advisement in your chosen major.

Applicants must be in good standing at their previous institution(s) to be considered for admission at UTRGV.

  • Assured admission is in place for transfer applicants who have earned an associate’s degree from an accredited college. 
  • Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on all coursework attempted.
  • Applicants with 0-23 earned college hours must also meet the freshman admission requirements. 

Priority Deadlines

  • Summer Sessions: April 1 
  • Fall Semester: May 1 
  • Spring Semester: November 1

Applications completed after the priority deadline will still be considered for the application term, but processing times may be longer.

Clery Act

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes information on safety and security policies, including crime and fire statistics for the previous three years.

The report is available on the University Police website at:  https://utrgv.link/csr2024.  A hard copy of the report is available at the University Police Departments located on 501 N. Sugar Rd. (Edinburg), 2671 FJRM Ave. (Brownsville), 2102 Treasure Hills Blvd. (Harlingen), or 1937 East Bustamante Street (Laredo), also by contacting University Police at 956-882-7777.
